History Of World Weightlifting Championships

The World Weightlifting Championships is an event organised by International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). It has been held since 1891. In March 1891, competing against champions from Brussels, Hamburg, England, Vienna, Italy, and Berlin in a three-day event, Edward Lawrence Levy of England won the first World Weightlifting Championship.The event consisted mainly of repetition and alternate pressing, with 56 pounds (25 kg) or 84 pounds (38 kg) in each hand.


Athletes compete in a total of 15 weight categories (8 for men and 7 for women):

Men categories: 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg and +105 kg.

Women categories: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg and +75 kg.


  • 2013-The 2013 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Wroclaw, Poland. The event took place from October 20 to 27, 2013.
  • 2011-The 2011 World Weightlifting Championships were held at Disneyland Paris in Paris, France. The event took place from November 5 to 13, 2011.
  • 2010-The 2010 World Weightlifting Championships were held at Antalya Expo Center in Antalya, Turkey. The event took place from September 17 to September 26, 2010.
  • 2009-The World Weightlifting Championships 2009 was held in Goyang, South Korea. The event took place from November 20 to November 29, 2009.
  • 2006-The Royal World Weightlifting Championships 2007 were held at the 700th Anniversary Sports Complex in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The event took place from September 17 to September 26, 2007.The 2006 World Weightlifting Championships were held at the Handball Pavilion and Weightlifting Pavilion Dr. José Joaquín Puello in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The event took place from September 30 to October 7, 2006.
  • 2005-The 2005 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Doha, Qatar from November 9 to November 17.
  • 2003-The 2003 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Vancouver, Canada from November 14 to November 22, 2003.
  • 2002-The 2002 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Warsaw, Poland from November 18 to November 26, 2002.
  • 2001-The 2001 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Antalya, Turkey.
  • 1999-The 1999 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Athens, Greece from November 21 to November 28, 1999. It was the main qualifying events in the sport for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
  • 1998-The 1998 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Lahti, Finland from November 10 to November 15, 1998.
  • 1997-The 1997 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from December 6 to December 14, 1997. In the men's tournament there were a total number of 189 athletes (51 nations) competing, while there were 143 women in action from 29 nations.
  • 1996-The 1996 Women's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Warsaw, Poland from May 3 to May 11, 1996. There were 102 women in action from 24 nations.
  • 1995-The 1995 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Guangzhou, China from November 16 to November 26,
  • 1994-The 1994 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Istanbul, Turkey from November 17 to November 27, 1994.
  • 1993-The 1993 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Melbourne, Australia from November 11 to November 21, 1993.
  • 1992-The 1992 Women's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Varna, Bulgaria from May 16 to May 24, 1992. There were 110 women in action from 25 nations.
  • 1991-The 1991 World Weightlifting Championships were held in Donaueschingen, Germany from September 27 to October 6, 1991.
  • 1990-The following is the final results of the 1990 World Weightlifting Championships. Men's competition were held in Budapest, Hungary and Women's competition were held in Sarajevo, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
  • 1989-The following is the final results of the 1989 World Weightlifting Championships. Men's competition were held in Athens, Greece and Women's competition were held in Manchester, United Kingdom.
  • 1987-The following is the final results of the 1987 World Weightlifting Championships. Men's competition were held in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia and Women's competition were held in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States.
  • 1986-The 1986 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Sofia, Bulgaria from November 8 to November 15, 1986. There were 193 men in action from 41 nations.
  • 1985-The 1985 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Södertälje, Sweden from August 23 to September 1, 1985. There were 195 men in action from 38 nations.
  • 1984-The 1984 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Los Angeles, United States from July 29 to August 8, 1984. There were 187 men in action from 48 nations.This tournament was a part of 1984 Summer Olympics but counted as World Weightlifting Championships too. Only total medals counted for Olympic Games while Snatch and Clean & Jerk medals counts for World Weightlifting Championships. The Soviet-led boycott meant that the most dominant forces in weightlifting at the time, the USSR, Bulgaria and East Germany did not take part.
  • 1983-The 1983 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held at the Izmailovo Sports Palace in Moscow, Soviet Union from October 22 to October 31, 1983. There were 187 men in action from 32 nations.
  • 1982-The 1982 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Hala Tivoli, Ljubljana, SR Slovenia, SFR Yugoslavia from September 18 to September 26, 1982. There were 205 men in action from 38 nations.
  • 1981-The 1981 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Lille, France from September 13 to September 20, 1981. There were 194 men in action from 35 nations.
  • 1980-The 1980 Men's World Weightlifting Championships were held in Moscow, Soviet Union from July 20 to July 30, 1980. There were 173 men in action from 40 nations.This tournament was a part of 1980 Summer Olympics but counted as World Weightlifting Championships too. Only total medals counted for Olympic Games while Snatch and Clean & Jerk medals counts for World Weightlifting Championships.
