How to Find and Apply for Your First Graduate Job?

Many final-year students dream of walking straight into their ideal job. If you’re one of the lucky ones with a job lined up months before graduation, congratulations. If you’re not – don’t worry, there’s plenty of times to find the right graduate job for you.

Of course, this is easier said than done! Whether in public sector or private organizations, competition for graduate jobs is high. So here are some tips and advice to maximize your chance of success:

1. Ask your professors for references and contacts

You might be amazed, but your professors can be a good source of contacts for finding graduate jobs in a company you want to join. The professors in your college will have extensive networks of alumni and professionals in industries related to their field, and they can provide you with references and introductions. So make sure you maintain a good relationship with your professors!

2. Search for graduate jobs online

Many online job portals cater to recent graduates, helping them find entry-level graduate job opportunities. You’ll need to update your CV so that it gets the attention of recruiters (avoiding these common mistakes). Sometimes you will also find job sites organizing events that you can attend to meet recruiters in person.

3. Go directly to the careers page of company websites

Want to join a particular company? Then you should go directly to the careers page of the company’s website. Often, you will find that the company announces vacancies and job opportunities here, as well as on their social media channels. Also, you’ll be able to connect with HR representatives of the company through email. This can increase your chances of getting an interview call.

4. Identify professionals already working there

If you are looking to join your dream company but haven’t found any job opportunities, try connecting with professionals who work there. Did you know that the job vacancies in a company are not publicly advertised, but are filled through references coming through the employees? Networking with professionals working there can help you find out about any such job openings.

5. Take the help of a recruitment consultant

When you feel that you have tried everything and nothing is working, you can seek the help of recruitment consultants. Some recruitment consultants might charge a fee, in return for personalized advice, while others are free. If there’s a particular sector you want to work in, search for recruitment agencies specializing in that field.

6. Create the perfect first impression

It’s normal to feel a bit intimidated by the prospect of attending a job interview in a place where you are for the first time. You need to practice that perfect impression you want to display to the interviewer. This includes the way you dress, the way you communicate and even your body language. Make sure you are always confident. Understand what the dress code of the company is and if in doubt err on the more formal side.

7. Take up a part-time job in the mean time

It is not a good thing to have a gap period in your résumé. If you’re struggling to find the graduate job you want, you should take up a part-time or short-term job while looking for your dream role. Even if it’s not what you had in mind, this will provide you with valuable experience, transferable skills and new connections.

Finally, always put in the effort to make sure you’re prepared for interviews, tests or group discussions. Preparation instills confidence, and when you have confidence, success is easy.
