The long cherished dream of establishing a Law College in the holy city of Puri was materialized due to the untiring effort of some eminent personalities of this town headed by Late Sri Suresh Chandra Nayak an eminent advocate of Puri in the early 1980's. The college is named after the name of Late Sri Gangadhar Mohapatra, famous educationist, noted politician and an eminent jurists of his time with illustrious background. The college was established on 13. 09. 1981.
The college has got government recognition from the government of Orissa and permanent affiliation from Utkal University. The college enjoys the approval of the Bar council of India and became eligible to receive financial assistance from U.G.C in the year 1996. The state has provided Ac. 4.00 prime land at Penthakata of Chakratirtha Road, Puri. The college is constructed over an area of 1800 sqft along with staff quarters, ladies hostel, guest house, cycle shed, meeting pendal, canteen and play ground. The college has been accredited by NAAC with "B" grade in 2007.
The college provides quality teaching through experienced and qualified teachers. The students of this college have a wide range of option in co and extra curricular activities like N.S.S., Red Ribbon Club, Legal Aid Clinic, Cyber Society Sports and Games, Seminars, Debate, Moot Court etc. The college has got a well equipped library and its library has been named after the name of Late Sri Purna Chandra Kanungo an eminent criminal advocate of our state. The library is divided into three sections namely Reference section ,Text book section and Journal section. The SC & ST book bank schemes financed by the welfare Dept. of Govt. of Odisha is in operation. Reading room facility and book lending system is available to the benefit of the students.
A number of students who have passed from this college also have joined in bar, as Judicial officers, Law officers under State Govt. and Public sector undertaking as legal assistants etc.
Today, G.M. Law College, Puri stands to break the fresh ground , the future looks bright and we hope to serve the society in the better ways by affording more opportunities of our students.
The vision of the college is not only to produce students with legal draftsmanship and legal expertise and fit for bench and bar also is inculcate amongst them a spirit for helping those who are in need of justice some broad objectives of the college are :-
To encourage the students about the cultural, ethical and legal values, in order to promote the rule of law in the society.
To educate the students with basic principles of Laws with critical evaluation thereof.
To make the students aware with the new areas of Law by organizing seminars, moot courts and symposia.
