Singapore Swimming Association is the National Sports Association governing Swimming, Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming, Diving and Open Water Swimming in Singapore.Swimming offers many unique advantages over other sports making it an ideal choice for young people. Long-time swimmers can attest to the life skills gained by participation, including time management, goal setting, co-operation and independence.
Swimming was not widely practised until the early 19thcentury, when the National Swimming Society of Great Britain began to hold competitions. Most early swimmers used the breaststroke, or a similar form of it.
Since the inclusion of Swimming in the Olympics in 1896, Swimming has undergone tremendous development. As it gained popularity over the years, The ancient strokes as such freestyle and breaststroke is now joined by other modern strokes namely the butterfly, backstroke and individual medley. From the humble beginning of just 4 swimming events, the Olympic Games now offer up to 32 events ranging from various swimming strokes.
Swimming in Singapore experienced a new wave of changes in 2005. Through strategic improvements and alignments to target, preparatory, developmental and local competitions, Singapore has seen its best performances at the South-East Asian Games and Asian Games in recent years.
