கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க அதற்குத் தக

விளக்கம்
பிழை இல்லாதவற்றைத் தனது குறைகள் நீங்குமளவுக்குக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் கற்ற பிறகு அதன்படி நடக்கவேண்டும்

Couplet 391
So learn that you may full and faultless learning gain,
Then in obedience meet to lessons learnt remain

Transliteration
Karka Kasatarak Karpavai Katrapin
Nirka Adharkuth Thaka

Explanation
Let a man learn thoroughly whatever he may learn, and let his conduct be worthy of his learning

குறள் 392
எண்ணென்ப ஏனை யெழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டுங்
கண்ணென்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு

விளக்கம்
எண்ணும் எழுத்தும் எனப்படும் அறிவுக் கண்களைப் பெற்றவர்களே, உயிர் வாழ்வோர் எனக் கருதப்படுவார்கள்

Couplet 392
The twain that lore of numbers and of letters give
Are eyes, the wise declare, to all on earth that live

Transliteration
Ennenpa Enai Ezhuththenpa Ivvirantum
Kannenpa Vaazhum Uyirkku

Explanation
Letters and numbers are the two eyes of man

குறள் 393
கண்ணுடைய ரென்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு
புண்ணுடையர் கல்லா தவர்

விளக்கம்
கண்ணில்லாவிடினும் அவர் கற்றவராக இருப்பின் கண்ணுடையவராகவே கருதப்படுவார் கல்லாதவருக்குக் கண் இருப்பினும் அது புண் என்றே கருதப்படும்

Couplet 393
Men who learning gain have eyes, men say;
Blockheads' faces pairs of sores display

Transliteration
Kannutaiyar Enpavar Katror Mukaththirantu
Punnutaiyar Kallaa Thavar

Explanation
The learned are said to have eyes, but the unlearned have (merely) two sores in their face

குறள் 394
உவப்பத் தலைக்கூடி உள்ளப் பிரிதல்
அனைத்தே புலவர் தொழில்

விளக்கம்
மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்கிடச் சேர்ந்து பழகுவதும், பிரிந்திட நேரும் போது மனங்கலங்குவதும் அறிவிற் சிறந்தோர் செயலாகும்

Couplet 394
You meet with joy, with pleasant thought you part;
Such is the learned scholar's wonderous art

Transliteration
Uvappath Thalaikkooti Ullap Piridhal
Anaiththe Pulavar Thozhil

Explanation
It is the part of the learned to give joy to those whom they meet, and on leaving, to make them think (Oh! when shall we meet them again.)

குறள் 395
உடையார்முன் இல்லார்போல் ஏக்கற்றுங் கற்றார்
கடையரே கல்லா தவர்

விளக்கம்
அறிவுடையார் முன் அறிவில்லாதவர் போல் தாழ்ந்து நின்று, மேலும் கற்றுக்கொள்பவர்களின் ஆர்வத்தைக் கற்றுக் கொள்ளாதவர்கள் கடைநிலை மாந்தராக கருதப்படுவார்கள்

Couplet 395
With soul submiss they stand, as paupers front a rich man's face;
Yet learned men are first; th'unlearned stand in lowest place

Transliteration
Utaiyaarmun Illaarpol Ekkatrung Katraar
Kataiyare Kallaa Thavar

Explanation
The unlearned are inferior to the learned, before whom they stand begging, as the destitute before the wealthy

தொட்டனைத் தூறு மணற்கேணி மாந்தர்க்குக்
கற்றனைத் தூறும் அறிவு

விளக்கம்
தோண்டத் தோண்ட ஊற்றுநீர் கிடைப்பது போலத் தொடர்ந்து படிக்கப் படிக்க அறிவு பெருகிக் கொண்டே இருக்கும்

Couplet 396
In sandy soil, when deep you delve, you reach the springs below;
The more you learn, the freer streams of wisdom flow

Transliteration
Thottanaith Thoorum Manarkeni Maandharkkuk
Katranaith Thoorum Arivu

Explanation
Water will flow from a well in the sand in proportion to the depth to which it is dug, and knowledge will flow from a man in proportion to his learning

குறள் 397
யாதானும் டாடாமால் ஊராமால் என்னொருவன்
சாந்துணையுங் கல்லாத வாறு

விளக்கம்
கற்றோர்க்கு எல்லா நாடுகளிலும் எல்லா ஊர்களிலும் சிறப்பு என்கிறபோது, ஒருவன் சாகும் வரையில் கற்காமல் காலம் கழிப்பது ஏனோ?

Couplet 397
The learned make each land their own, in every city find a home;
Who, till they die; learn nought, along what weary ways they roam

Transliteration
Yaadhaanum Naataamaal Ooraamaal Ennoruvan
Saandhunaiyung Kallaadha Vaaru

Explanation
How is it that any one can remain without learning, even to his death, when (to the learned man) every country is his own (country), and every town his own (town) ?

குறள் 398
ஒருமைக்கண் தான்னற்ற கல்வி ஒருவற்
கெழுமையும் ஏமாப் புடைத்து

விளக்கம்
ஒரு தலைமுறையில் பெறும் கல்வி அறிவானது, ஏழேழு தலைமுறைக்கும் பாதுகாப்பாக அமையும்

Couplet 398
The man who store of learning gains,
In one, through seven worlds, bliss attains

Transliteration
Orumaikkan Thaan Katra Kalvi Oruvarku
Ezhumaiyum Emaap Putaiththu

Explanation
The learning, which a man has acquired in one birth, will yield him pleasure during seven births

குறள் 399
தாமின் புறுவ துலகின் புறக்கண்டு
காமுறுவர் கற்றறிந் தார்

விளக்கம்
தமக்கு இன்பம் தருகின்ற கல்வியறிவு உலகத்தாருக்கும் இன்பம் தருவதைக் கண்டு, அறிஞர்கள் மேலும் மேலும் பலவற்றைக் கற்றிட விரும்புவார்கள்

Couplet 399
Their joy is joy of all the world, they see; thus more The learners learn to love their cherished lore

Transliteration
Thaamin Puruvadhu Ulakin Purak Kantu
Kaamuruvar Katrarin Thaar

Explanation
The learned will long (for more learning), when they see that while it gives pleasure to themselves, the world also derives pleasure from it

குறள் 400
கேடில் விழுச் செல்வங் கல்வி யொருவற்கு
மாடல்ல மற்றை யவை

விளக்கம்
கல்வி ஒன்றே அழிவற்ற செல்வமாகும் அதற்கொப்பான சிறந்த செல்வம் வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை

Couplet 400
Learning is excellence of wealth that none destroy;
To man nought else affords reality of joy

Transliteration
Ketil Vizhuchchelvam Kalvi Yoruvarku
Maatalla Matrai Yavai

Explanation
Learning is the true imperishable riches; all other things are not riches
