திருவள்ளுவர் அருளிய திருக்குறள்

குறள் 1291
அவர்நெஞ் சவர்க்காதல் கண்டும் எவன்நெஞ்சே
நீயெமக் காகா தது

விளக்கம்
நெஞ்சே! நம்மை நினைக்காமல் இருப்பதற்கு அவருடைய நெஞ்சு அவருக்குத் துணையாக இருக்கும்போது நீ எமக்குத் துணையாக இல்லாமல் அவரை நினைத்து உருகுவது ஏன்?

Couplet 1291
You see his heart is his alone
O heart, why not be all my own

Transliteration
Avarnenju Avarkkaadhal Kantum Evannenje
Neeemakku Aakaa Thadhu

Explanation
O my soul! although you have seen how his soul stands by him, how is it you do not stand by me?

குறள் 1292
உறாஅ தவர்க்கண்ட கண்ணும் அவரைச்
செறாஅரெனச் சேறியென் நெஞ்சு

விளக்கம்
நெஞ்சே! நம்மிடம் அன்பு காட்டாதவர் அவர் எனக் கண்ட பிறகும், நம்மை வெறுக்க மாட்டார் என நம்பி அவரிடம் செல்கின்றாயே

Couplet 1292
Tis plain, my heart, that he 's estranged from thee;
Why go to him as though he were not enemy

Transliteration
Uraaa Thavarkkanta Kannum Avaraich
Cheraaarenach Cheriyen Nenju

Explanation
O my soul! although you have known him who does not love me, still do you go to him, saying "he will not be displeased."

குறள் 1293
கெட்டார்க்கு நட்டாரில் என்பதோ நெஞ்சேநீ
பெட்டாங் கவர்பின் செலல்

விளக்கம்
நெஞ்சே! நீ எனை விடுத்து அவரை விரும்பிப் பின் தொடர்ந்து செல்வது, துன்பத்தால் அழிந்தோர்க்கு நண்பர்கள் துணையிருக்க மாட்டார்கள் என்று சொல்வது போலவோ?

Couplet 1293
The ruined have no friends, 'they say; and so, my heart,
To follow him, at thy desire, from me thou dost depart

Transliteration
Kettaarkku Nattaaril Enpadho Nenjenee
Pettaangu Avarpin Selal

Explanation
O my soul! do you follow him at pleasure under the belief that the ruined have no friends?

குறள் 1294
இனியன்ன நின்னொடு சூழ்வார்யார் நெஞ்சே
துனிசெய்து துவ்வாய்காண் மற்று

விளக்கம்
நெஞ்சே! முதலில் ஊடல் செய்து பிறகு அதன் பயனைக் கூடலில் நுகர்வோம் என நினைக்க மாட்டாய்; எனவே அதைப்பற்றி உன்னிடம் யார் பேசப் போகிறார்கள்? நான் பேசுவதாக இல்லை

Couplet 1294
See, thou first show offended pride, and then submit,' I bade;
Henceforth such council who will share with thee my heart

Transliteration
Inianna Ninnotu Soozhvaaryaar Nenje
Thuniseydhu Thuvvaaikaan Matru

Explanation
O my soul! you would not first seem sulky and then enjoy (him); who then would in future consult you about such things?

குறள் 1295
பெறாஅமை அஞ்சும் பெறினபிரி வஞ்சும்
அறாஅ இடும்பைத்தென் நெஞ்சு

விளக்கம்
என் நெஞ்சத்துக்குத் துன்பம் தொடர் கதையாகவே இருக்கிறது காதலரைக் காணவில்லையே என்று அஞ்சும்; அவர் வந்து விட்டாலோ பிரிந்து செல்வாரே என நினைத்து அஞ்சும்

Couplet 1295
I fear I shall not gain, I fear to lose him when I gain;
And thus my heart endures unceasing pain

Transliteration
Peraaamai Anjum Perinpirivu Anjum
Araaa Itumpaiththen Nenju

Explanation
My soul fears when it is without him; it also fears when it is with him; it is subject to incessant sorrow

குறள் 1296
தனியே இருந்து நினைத்தக்கால் என்னைத்
தினிய இருந்ததென் நெஞ்சு

விளக்கம்
காதலர் பிரிவைத் தனியே இருந்து நினைத்தபோது என் நெஞ்சம் என்னைத் தின்பது போலக் கொடுமையாக இருந்தது

Couplet 1296
My heart consumes me when I ponder lone,
And all my lover's cruelty bemoan

Transliteration
Thaniye Irundhu Ninaiththakkaal Ennaith
Thiniya Irundhadhen Nenju

Explanation
My mind has been (here) in order to eat me up (as it were) whenever I think of him in my solitude

குறள் 1297
நாணும் மறந்தேன் அவர்மறக் கல்லாவென்
மாணா மடநெஞ்சிற் பட்டு

விளக்கம்
அவரை மறக்க முடியாமல் வாடும் என்னுடைய சிறப்பில்லாத மட நெஞ்சத்துடன் சேர்ந்து மறக்கக் கூடாது நாணத்தையும் மறந்து விட்டேன்

Couplet 1297
Fall'n 'neath the sway of this ignoble foolish heart,
Which will not him forget, I have forgotten shame

Transliteration
Naanum Marandhen Avarmarak Kallaaen
Maanaa Matanenjir Pattu

Explanation
I have even forgotten my modesty, having been caught in my foolish mind which is not dignified enough to forget him

குறள் 1298
எள்ளின் இளிவாமென் றெண்ணி அவர்திறம்
உள்ளும் உயிர்க்காதல் நெஞ்சு

விளக்கம்
பிரிந்து சென்ற காதலரை இகழ்வது தனக்கே இழிவாகும் என்பதால், அவருடைய பெருமையைப் பற்றியே என்னுயிர்க் காதல் நெஞ்சம் எண்ணிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்

Couplet 1298
If I contemn him, then disgrace awaits me evermore;
My soul that seeks to live his virtues numbers o'er

Transliteration
Ellin Ilivaamendru Enni Avardhiram
Ullum Uyirkkaadhal Nenju

Explanation
My soul which clings to life thinks only of his (own) gain in the belief that it would be disgraceful for it to despise him

குறள் 1299
துன்பத்திற் கியாரே துணையாவார் தாமுடைய
நெஞ்சந் துணையல் வழி

விளக்கம்
துன்பம் வரும்போது அதனைத் தாங்குவதற்கு நெஞ்சமே துணையாக இல்லாவிட்டால் பிறகு யார் துணையாக இருப்பார்?

Couplet 1299
And who will aid me in my hour of grief,
If my own heart comes not to my relief

Transliteration
Thunpaththirku Yaare Thunaiyaavaar Thaamutaiya
Nenjan Thunaiyal Vazhi

Explanation
Who would help me out of one's distress, when one's own soul refuses help to one?

குறள் 1300
தஞ்சம் தமரல்லர் ஏதிலார் தாமுடைய
நெஞ்சம் தமரல் வழி

விளக்கம்
நமக்குரிய நெஞ்சமே நம்முடன் உறவாக இல்லாத போது, மற்றவர் உறவில்லாதவராக இருத்தல் என்பது எளிதேயாகும்

Couplet 1300
A trifle is unfriendliness by aliens shown,
When our own heart itself is not our own

Transliteration
Thanjam Thamarallar Edhilaar Thaamutaiya
Nenjam Thamaral Vazhi

Explanation
It is hardly possible for strangers to behave like relations, when one's own soul acts like a stranger
