Streetfield is located on the southern outskirts of Dunstable and was built in fields to the side of the old Roman road, Watling Street.
Eighteenth century maps show that the area was named Street Fields. More recently it was the site of the town’s rubbish dump where hundreds of red poppies flourished right up until recent times. Hence the name of the school and the choice of the poppy as the school emblem. A poppy is also the symbol of knowledge and learning.
Streetfield is a modern, purpose-built school designed to accommodate approximately 450 pupils. Originally intended as a middle school the town’s schools made the decision to become primary and secondary. Plans for it to become an innovative and visionary primary school were abandoned once the Council decided that falling pupil numbers in the town made it superfluous to need. Parental demand and wide recognition of the school’s strengths and achievements were not enough to counteract financial considerations.
