The city of Dehradun was christened so, when Shri Guru Ram Rai Ji put up its â??Deraâ? (Settlement) in Doon Valley. Then Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb gifted the town of Dehradun (in its original splendour, it was of 6 villages) to the Guru. The rich heritage and golden history is quite evident in the architectural splendour of the holy Gurudwara. Uttarakhand stands for the magnanimous Himalayas, the holiest of the rivers, the spiritual mystery, stunning landscapes, the incessantly colorful play of nature, enchanting history carved in ancient stones, a mesmerizing floral and faunal plethora, 175 rare species of aromatic & medicinal plants. Dehradun is the capital city of the state. The city is bordered by the Himalayas in the north, the Shivalik Hills to the south, the river Ganges to the east, and the Yamuna River to the west. Towns located in the foothills of the mountain ranges include Mussoorie, Sahastradhara, Chakrata, Lakhamandal, Gautam Kund, Chandrabani and Dakpathar.
