Thirty paintings by Indonesian artists are being exhibited for sale at The Dharmawangsa Jakarta in South Jakarta until July 27 to help fund education for children in need.

Dubbed Art Charity for Education, the event coincides with National Children’s Day on July 23 and is hosted by Bank Mandiri alongside Hoshizora Foundation, Sicincin Indonesia Contemporary Art (SICA), Bimasena and Saravasti Communication and Publication.

“Access to quality education is very important. We always say that when it comes to education, it is not a donation; we call it educational payback. Because without an education, which was quite affordable back then, we wouldn’t be standing here today," said Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan during the opening ceremony on Saturday.

The collection of paintings, which was curated by Wahyudin and includes some works of renowned artists such as Nasirun and Ugo Untoro, are being offered for between Rp 25 million (US$1,906) and Rp 350 million. Some have already been purchased.

Fifty percent of revenue from the event will go to the artists and the other half to the hosts. Later, some of the hosts' revenue will be donated to foster children under the care of the Hoshizora Foundation.

The art charity plans to hold a second exhibition at Plaza Mandiri Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta from July 27 to Aug. 5, showcasing the 30 artworks as well as 55 additional paintings.
