In view of the rise in demand in architecture, the state is planning to set up its own college.

Of the 60 plus architecture colleges in the state, only one is a government college, while two others—Academy of Architecture Rachna Sansad in Mumbai and BKPS College of Architecture in Pune are government-aided.

About 157 years after the Sir JJ College of Architecture was set up, the department of higher and technical education is now planning to set up a second government architecture college in the state to meet the increasing demand from students. The new college is likely to be located in the western suburbs beyond Andheri. A study group comprising two members has been set up to carry out a feasibility study for it.

Director, directorate of technical education (DTE), S K Mahajan and principal, Sir JJ College of Architecture, Rajiv Mishra, have been entrusted with the job, said an official. A professor said, the government college in a professional course will ensure quality education.

As architecture colleges in the state are not assessed for quality, the state is planning to introduce a grading system for the colleges. In a workshop organised by the DTE on Thursday, representatives from all architecture colleges will come together to finalise parameters for grading colleges. A professor said, we will study how the parameters of NAAC can be modified to include specific criteria for architecture colleges. Once the parameters are finalized, we will send it to the Council of Architecture for nod. No other states grade architecture colleges.
