In yet another change of decision, the state school education department has allowed schools to cancel admission of Right to Education (RTE) seats in the pre-primary section. The decision is likely to affect over a thousand students who secured admission to the KG section through online admission and lottery held by BMC.

On Monday, school education minister Vinod Tawde met officials of the education department and BMC besides school managements to redress their grievances of the ongoing admission process. "From next year, schools can chose their entry level but this year, the entry level will be class I. If students have been admitted to the KG section, schools can cancel the admissions and ask students to return next year," said school education secretary Nandkumar.

A government resolution to that effect will be issued on Tuesday. Schools will not be able to cancel class I admissions given this year. In round one of the lottery, 2,596 students were allotted seats in 284 schools of which over 1,300 students secured admission to either KG or class I.

However, civic education department officials are unsure about implementation of the decision. "We expect that clear guidelines will be given in the GR. If admissions are cancelled, parents will be upset and it could backfire on the government," said the official. Another official said two more rounds of lottery are expected next week.
