University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, revealed the launch of the India Study Centre Cork(ISCC) in Delhi to enable the School of Asian Studies and the university to explore deeper research ties with India. The study centre intends to develop a basis for a multi-disciplinary study of contemporary India and its cultural, social, religious, historical and political dynamics, apart from helping develop mutual research and teaching activities between India and UCC. The presence of the centre will help the two countries share academic resources and facilitate exchanges.

"We are looking at areas like Indian migration in Ireland, indigenous Adivasi cultures in India and other shared historical linkages between the two countries," says Christopher Shepard, international co-ordinator and vice chair, ASEAN and India Strategy Group, UCC.

There are plans to spread the project to different Indian cities with a proposed exchange programme for UCC students at Bhopal, in the pipeline. Shepard explains, "The study centre hopes to co-organise a winter school with the Indira Gandhi Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal, one of the largest anthropological museums in Asia, which will enable UCC students to study forms of sustainable livelihoods among indigenous people of South Asia”.

Apart from increasing engagement with Indian students and universities through the Erasmus programme and visiting fellowships, the study centre is also planning to apply for an ICCR Chair in modern India studies within the Indian government funded Visiting India Professor scheme. Shepard concludes, “In the long-term, with the support of the Indian government, the centre may start Sanskrit and Hindi language classes".
