H P Govt to offer free education

Himachal Pradesh is becoming the first state to provide free education for University Students. High court has directed the government to increase the amount of scholarship given to differently-abled students at University level. The state government has also been intended by the court to get the law of providing free education to specially-abled students up to 18 years of age within next six months.

Ajai Srivastava of Umang Foundation, disability rights activist of a public welfare trust wrote a letter to the high court supporting the case. Following that a judgment was passed by Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan. Rs 1 lakh was also awarded to the Umang Foundation by the High Court for the welfare of disabled children.

Universities at Solan and Palampur have also been instructed to make necessary amendments in the respective ordinances and prospectus in order to provide free education to disabled students. The HP state public service commission and HP subordinate service selection board have also been instructed to amend their regulations within the same time frame of six months.

In order to uplift their position in the society and keep them at par with the rest, the court has also instructed to put screen readers, screen magnifiers, speech recognition software, hand-held magnifiers and text-to-speech software in the classroom.
