SHEELAM PARAMABHUSHANAM
When Maharaja Krishna Raja Wodeyar IV was installed as the Maharaja of Mysore in August 1902, he received a petition by the people of Mysore regarding an article titled “The causes of Restoration of Mysore in 1799”. The people of Mysore expressed their regret that the Kingdom is replete with statues, buildings and endowments perpetuating the memory of personages connected with its history. Unfortunately, there is no sign of commemoration of Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni who was the regenerator of the Mysore Hindu Kingdom on the most solid and safest foundation. It is required to transmit her memory to posterity. The present generation is grateful to the Maharani for the administration of the state. She gave utmost encouragement to arts, literature and culture. Hence, by 1930, the Maharaja decided to start a Women’s College in her name in Bangalore. Somehow, while the resolution to establish a Women’s college in Bangalore was passed by Mysore University senate, the proposal to name it after Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni was postponed. The Maharaja was greatly disappointed and at an interview in 1937, said “Somebody will do this service to me”.
Truly it did happen, and in 1972, Dr.K.N.V.Sastri, a noted scholar and historian, Dr.M.N.Mahadevan and Sri T.S.Rajam started Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women to empower women through education.
