About Salaam Baalak Trust :

Salaam Baalak Trust was first established as a direct result of the movie Salaam Bombay! Which used the power of cinema to depict the lives of street children. As the film was made with real street children, the film makers saw the potential in these children and created a trust from which programs could be implemented to provide resources and services to street children.

In Bombay, the first center was opened in Dongri in association with Maharashtra State Women's Council in the 1989. The Night Shelter was established on the same premises in 1996. As the work continued to grow, a second contact point was established behind a canteen at Girgaon Chowpatty from where it moved into a garden, to a pump house and eventually, in the year 2000 into our own shed, with indispensable cooperation from Jawahar Bal Bhawan and our valued donors. In 2007 we started a night shelter for boys in Kalyan.

A milestone in 2007 for Salaam Baalak Trust was the rehabilitation of some of the beggar children of Mumbai. We have enrolled 75 children as boarders in Sholapur Ashram Schools.

The Career Project began with our first training class in May 2010. To date, 31 youth have begun training. The Career Project links underprivileged young adults, mainly former street youth, to companies where they can learn an in-demand skill and directly gain employment after the training period.
