Richard Lawrence Garwin is an American physicist. Richard was born on April 19, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. He received his bachelor's degree from the Case Institute of Technology in 1947 and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1949, where he worked in the lab of Enrico Fermi. Garwin received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest honor for the fields of science and engineering, award year 2002. Garwin is a long-time member of the Pugwash Conferences and has also served on the Pugwash Council. He is an IBM Fellow Emeritus and was a professor-at-large at Cornell University, an adjunct professor of Physics at Columbia University, and a professor of Public Policy at Harvard University. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. Garwin has authored and co-authored numerous books, published over 500 papers, and has been granted 45 U.S. patents.
